What's Next for Technology Is Advertising the Model of the Future?
In just ten years, the rapidly emerging value and economics of online advertising have caused a tectonic shift in conventional media. Will it do the same to software? The fifty-year-old business model of rich licensing and service fees could fade if competition in the form of ad-supported online software services come to the fore. The billion-dollar question: Is online advertising the winning model of the future for more than just content? Is it one of several models? Is it a hype-mongered fad? The only certainty is that the internet in general and Software as a Service in particular will have a big impact on the software industry. And while there is some momentum with advertising supported models, big questions loom: Will enterprises tolerate ad support the way consumers do? Will ad-supported software feel the same as ad-supported online content? What are the limits of this model? Can current leaders in the software industry navigate the change or will this be led instead by Google and new entrants?
